Hip arthritis
Also called hip osteoarthritis, degenerative hip disease, worn hip joint
Overview
Hip arthritis is the gradual wearing away of the smooth cartilage that covers the ball and socket of the hip joint. Osteoarthritis, the most common type, develops over time; inflammatory conditions, earlier injuries, and some differences in hip shape can also lead to arthritis.
Symptoms
- Pain in the groin, outer hip, or buttock, sometimes spreading toward the knee
- Stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting
- Pain with walking, standing, or getting in and out of a car
- Difficulty putting on shoes and socks
- A limp or a shorter walking distance
Treatment
Treatment depends on your symptoms, examination and goals. Your clinician will talk through which options fit you.
Diagnosis is based on symptoms, an examination of hip motion, and X-rays.
Non-operative treatment aims to reduce pain and keep you moving: activity changes, weight management when appropriate, physical therapy and exercise, a cane or other walking aid, pain-relieving medications when appropriate, and in some cases an image-guided injection.
When arthritis pain limits daily life despite these measures, total hip replacement may be recommended. The worn ball and socket are replaced with implants to relieve pain and restore movement. Your surgeon will review the benefits, risks, and recovery, including physical therapy, to help you decide whether and when surgery is right for you.
When to seek care
Make an appointment when hip pain or stiffness limits walking, sleep, or daily activities, or does not improve with home care.
Seek urgent care for sudden severe hip pain or inability to bear weight after a fall, which can signal a fracture, or for a hot, swollen joint with fever.
