Second opinions

Considering surgery, or unsure about a diagnosis? You can see one of our specialists for a second opinion. Here is how.

How to get a second opinion

  1. Choose a specialist

Our surgeons and physicians work in subspecialty teams, so you can see someone who focuses on your problem. Search Find a Surgeon by condition or body area, or start from the conditions guide for your diagnosis, which links to the providers who treat it.

  2. Book a new-patient visit

Use the booking button on the specialist’s page to schedule with them online in MyChart, or call (410) 268-8862 and tell us you would like a second opinion.

  3. Check your coverage

Ask your insurance plan whether it covers the visit. If your plan requires a referral or authorization, Luminis Health will help you get it. See insurance & billing.

  4. Bring your records

A second opinion is most useful when the specialist can review what was already done. Bring:

    • All previous X-ray, MRI, CT or bone scans
    • The name, address and phone number of the doctor who gave your first opinion, and of your primary care physician
    • A list of your current medications
    • A list of your questions, including what you were told and what was recommended
    • Your photo ID and insurance card

Records and imaging from Luminis Health: radiology images are available in MyChart, and the medical records department can send copies. See Medical records (Luminis Health) (opens in a new tab).
